The Erie Plating Company has remained a pioneer in the metal finishing industry since its humble beginnings in 1925. For 88 years, the company has made advancements and modifications necessary to survive the Great Depression, World War II, technological innovations and economic and employment fluctuations.

Originally, there was a demand for metal finishings in the Erie area, so Lewis Briggs Sr., and Raymon Smith took a dive into the industry. “We do not make anything here. What we do is take other peoples' products and make them beautiful, rust resistant, and enhance their purpose — doing things such as zinc plating, anodizing aluminum, and chrome plating,” says Bud Briggs, current Chairman.

Over the years, the Erie Plating Company has continued to grow. In the 1970s, they expanded their current facility on West 12th Street; in the 1980s, they innovated new automation systems; in the 1990s, they digitized their information systems improving efficiency; and today they continue to make great strides in the area of environmental compliance and protection. “From the 1940s to today, we have made approximately five expansions,” states Bud. “My biggest accomplishment through all the years of expansion has been the installation of strong quality requirements and systems which have received several international awards.”

As the company was challenged by globalization, they needed to come up with new ideas to stay afloat. “Two aspects have helped us achieve this,” states Dave Briggs, the third generation of leadership for the company. “The first: continuation of good employee relations. The second: extending our finishing services beyond our roots in Erie, as we continue to provide employment here,” adds Briggs. “As business demands have changed, our customer base has transformed from 80 percent local to 80 percent regional. We truly appreciate the opportunity to serve not only the local Erie community, but also the extended Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio regions.”The Erie Plating Company has remained a pioneer in the metal finishing industry since its humble beginnings in 1925.
